The Trump Administration has announced a 25% auto tariff targeting manufacturers outside the U.S., set to take effect on April 3, 2025.
This new tariff will apply to both vehicles and parts imported into the country, with the goal of boosting U.S. manufacturing.
What does this mean? Should we panic?
In short, no. I don’t think it’s time to panic… yet. It’s simply too early to tell what kind of effect these new tariffs will have. Sure, there’s a lot of panic buying and selling happening right now, but just like the toilet paper rush during the pandemic, we shouldn’t overreact.
OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) outside the U.S. are already charting a course to do a few things:
- Limit dealer exposure
- Protect market share
- Find workarounds
Bottom line? Don’t panic.
Car prices won’t spike overnight. Many dealers still have inventory to clear. So, if you’re looking to buy (or sell), now might be the time. If you plan to wait, just be prepared for a little sticker shock later on.
